Social media exploded in the last decade and anyone watching knows we’ve come a long way from Myspace. But it’s not just individuals that use the medium. Human Resources Departments and HR Directors have been using social media for quite a while as well.
Do you know how your HR department is using social media? The answers may surprise you. In a recent survey of human resource directors, these were the top ten ways they use social media:
Background checks—One of the biggest areas for HR directors on social media is to use it for background checks. If you post it on social media, chances are your HR director will see it and it can have a negative impact on your job. So make sure you keep the potentially embarrassing posts off-line.
Communication—The second biggest use for social media is to keep employees up-to-date on policies in the company. Any kind of information, from employee updates to training events can be advertised in this forum.
Benefits communication—Another way social media can be used is to communicate company policies to employees. At the top of that list is letting employees know about new benefits such as wellness initiatives and insurance changes.
Branding—Branding involves using social media to help the general public find out about the company. This is ultimately meant to reinforce the corporate brand.
Emergency notification—Some HR directors are setting up Twitter accounts to inform employees about emergencies. That way, the message can get out to all the employees through Twitter without having to go through email trees or phone chains.
Employee actions—Helping employees check on things that matter to them, such as schedules, vacation requests, and job assignments.
Promoting events—This can be an area where HR directors can help give the company a positive image by promoting events the company has sponsored. It can also inform of events coming up.
Recognition—One area many companies fall down on is giving recognition to employees for a job well done. Social media helps share all of these with the on-line community.
Research—Social media is also a great way for HR directors to do research. Knowledge is key when it comes to staying up-to-date with the hottest trends.
Weekly blog—A weekly blog option is also being utilized to help with training and education. This involves sharing information and training articles with employees and managers.
